To Freeze or Not to Freeze?
There is an amazing collection of images from the dance world on the NY Times’ LENS page. And they bring up the debate - are still images the ultimate medium to capture the power of dance? A fascinating question, and odd since dance is all about motion and fluidity, yet that instant flash of the shutter seems to isolate the process of the movement so we can see inside it.
So how best to capture dance in motion on film? This is a question we struggled with on our shoot for Tiny Dancer. Our cinematographer, Kate Phelan, had the wonderful idea to use small, portable GoPro cameras and let our lead actress, dancer Katherine Crockett move with them. The result is a breathtaking fandango of blissful, disorienting movement that takes you inside our lead characters mind and her dance like nothing else I’ve seen.
We can’t wait to introduce you all to this amazing footage when we release the trailer for our work in progress this fall. Stay tuned!
